Grooming
Several of the hospitals offer full service grooming for your pets. Grooming is vital part of your pet's well-care. It is a mistake to think that grooming is a luxury, only to be done under special circumstances or for special occasions. Instead, grooming is actual a necessary part of good dog care. Grooming is needed to maintain a healthy, glossy coat, unblemished skin, and well-trimmed nails. A well-groomed pet is a healthy, comfortable pet and unlikely to suffer from skin conditions, broken or torn toenails, or the misery of itching. In addition, small problems that are uncovered during grooming can be quickly and easily treated before they become major medical issues. For instance, nails are trimmed before they cut into sensitive pads, mild ear irritations are discovered before they become major infections, and small lumps and bumps can be identified and cared for before they become too large to easily treat.
Different types of pets require different kinds of grooming. The staff of the Progressive Pet Animal Hospitals is happy to explain the grooming technique that is best for your individual pet. In general, many breeds of dogs require bathing and clipping approximately every 6 weeks to maintain proper length and style of coat. However, many short-haired dogs require no more than an occasional bath and nail trim. Long-haired pets that are not frequently brushed may need mat removal and an entire body clip to remove the heavy snarls and tangles. In addition, all types of pets, including cats, may require medicated baths or dips in order to treat medical conditions that involve the skin.
Grooming services include bathing, clipping, brushing and combing, and nail trimming. Knots are professionally removed prior to bathing, appropriate shampoos and conditioners are used for your pet, and the animal is blown-dry and neatly trimmed with scissors and/or clippers. Eyes and ears are cleaned and the teeth are examined for dental plaque. Most animals tolerate grooming quite well and will stand or sit quietly. Others may require mild sedation. The staff will either personally speak with you regarding sedation or contact you via telephone if sedation is needed for your pet. Veterinary physical examinations are recommended for patients that will be groomed. This ensures that the pet can physically tolerate grooming and that no underlying problems are overlooked.
Our individual pet hospitals offer different services. Some offer grooming, some have grooming on the premises, while others do not offer routine grooming. Call your local Progressive Pet Animal Hospital to ask about grooming services and to be directed to the closest Progressive Pet Animal Hospital which meets your pet’s needs.
